The first grave was that of Jane E. Leverich who was born in 1817 and died in 1855. The cemetery has grown in size to become among the largest in Butler County. Following are some notes from the minutes of the Cemetery Associations meetings. May 30, 1907: A meeting was held at the Baptist Church on Thursday afternoon for the purpose of considering the adoption of articles of incorporation for the Riverside Cemetery Association. Officers elected were: Pres. Ella Adair; Vice Pres. Mary J. Kelsey; Sec. Harriet Winship; Treas. L.A. Larkin; and Directors Mary J. Kelsey, Harriet Winship, Lill Larkin, Kate J. Carter, Helen Richardson and Rosanna Jewell. Nov. 5,1907: Richard Hall was employed to dig graves at the rate of 15 cents per hour. The price charged by the Association to be $3.00 in the summer and $5.00 in the winter. A committee was appointed to see if Henry Meyer would sell the planks that he used in digging graves. He sold them for $10.50 Jan. 27,1908: Shares in the Association were sold for $2.50. Aug 4,1908: A committee was appointed to meet with the city council about buying the Savage property. They were Lill Larkin, Carrie Mansfield and Ella Smith. Arrangements were made to serve lunch on Field Day Aug. 12th. Feb. 2,1909: The committee offered Mr. Savage$1000 for all his land lying on the southwest side of Main Street. He is to have the house and any other buildings he may wish to move. If he will not accept this offer, the committee is to notify him that we will at once take whatever legal steps that may be necessary to make him sell it. On April 15th the property was purchased. Sept. 24,1909: The association voted to see Mr. F. McCague about pumping water into a tub for accomodation of people at the cemetery this fall. May 30,1910: Amendment to Sec. 7 that the annual meeting of the stockholders shall be held in the town of Shell Rock on Decoration Day at 3:00 PM. Also a motion was made to finish the vault. June 10, 1910: a committee was appointed to get a plumber to fix the tank and the well. May 18, 1911:The association voted that one inch pipes be laid from the Baptist Church corner and connect with pipes already in the cemetery. May 30,1912: A committee was appointed to investigate plans and expense of building a vault. Nov. 25, 1913: Voted to charge $1.00 a week for putting a body in the vault, with nothing less than $3.00. May 6, 1914: Galloway-Bros. Bowman Co. were hired to design and lay out the new addition to the cemetery for $5.00. The plans are to include locations of driveways, walks, plantings and a fence. There was a meeting on May 7th to accept the proposal. Oct 16, 1916: The association voted to accept the proposition of Mr. William Jones to build the brick pillers and wall at the Washington Street entrance and to furnish all the material and labor except digging the trenches for the foundation for the total sum of $240.00. There is to be a piller at the Harris Corner and at each side of the driveway entrance and three small posts, one at the Knapp Corner and one each side of the cement sidewalk. Nov 15, 1918: Voted to set aside the triangular lot on the left of the driveway for a Soldiers Burial Plat. Also to donate a lot across the driveway where memorial exercises could be held.
