Submitted to the USGenWeb Project Archives on January 9, 1997. ====================================================================== John Henry4 Ginn (OLIVER PERRY3, WILLIAM ELLIS2, JOHN1) was born April 04, 1882 in Conway, IA, and died December 17, 1931 in Ottawa, KS. He was the son of Oliver Perry Ginn and Ella Endsley. His wife was Edna Amelia5 Hill (GEORGE WASHINGTON4, GEORGE WASHINGTON3, DANIEL2, DANIEL1) daughter of George Washington Hill and Frances Ermina Griffin. John and Edna apparently lived on the Hill farm in Carroll County, Iowa. They eventually left the farm and moved to Cedar Rapids. When John died he was an executive with Cities Service, living in St. Louis. Maurice was born Jack Lightcap in Omaha, NE, and was adopted by John and Edna Ginn. We know nothing more of him. Imogene married William Brockway Warner in Ottawa, KS and died in 1975 in Tucker GA. She lived most of her life in El Reno OK and Safford AZ. She had two children, John Ginn (Jack) Warner and Roxy Michelle Warner, both now living in the Atlanta, GA area. Mother went home in evening. March 18 - Shucked corn. Father came to help. Both shucked 112 bu. Mother went to Carroll. Fine warm day, partly cloudy. Father stayed all night. March 19 - Husked corn. Father helped. Finished in afternoon and took 25 bu. in to Ralston. Rec'd 40 cents per bu; weighed 24.20. 9.75. Shoots & oil meal 3.35 March 20 - Went to Glidden. Had dinner. Peanuts & candy .25 Paper .05 Boyces came up in evening. March 21 - Done washing in morning. Father came down and we hauled 3 loads of hay from Tuttles. All big stacks. Took Boyces wagon home. March 22 - Went to Tuttles and fenced stack of hay. Pulled stone [?] rest of morning. Put plow together and plowed patches and weeds in p.m. Clear and warm. March 23 - Went to town. Took Edna. Telephone wire broke in house. Put disk together and started disking in p.m. Fine day for work. Strong wind blew top off stack at Tuttles. Dr. Roberts here in eve. chain for seeder .25 oil cans .40 snaps .05 turpentine .15 Later. 10 p.m. The Lord gave us a little girl at about eleven o'clock. Weighed 5 1/2 or 6 pounds. March 24 - Dr. Roberts came out at 10 a.m. Also Mrs. Roberts. Father & Mother here. Father and I & Maurice went to Tuttles to put top on stack. I disked in afternoon. As fine weather as could be had. Father went home in evening after trimming stacks in back. March 25 - We all think the baby is fine of course. Went after Bess Boyce in a.m. and took her home. Disked all day. Jones women were here in p.m. Very warm and partly cloudy. lettuce .10 March 26 - Disked in morning and pulled stone. Father came down and gathered stone. Finished disking 20 acres west of house. Went to town in p.m. milk pail.70 quart cup.10 shoots & bran 2.85 candy pails .25 tobacco .25 gum .05 4.20 March 27 - Sunday morning at 3 a.m. baby had colic. Bess Boyce came up and washed her. Went to town to see Roberts in p.m. about baby. Said she had jaundice mild form. Feed sugar and water. Fine clear day with good drying wind. March 28 - Disked N.E. corner in morn. Finished in p.m. Jones & Boyce both sowing oats in morning. Made garden in evening. One year since Father was buried and 29 years since he was married. Black cow Bess had calf in evening. Fine spring day. Warm and good breeze. March 29 - Very windy and cloudy with showers in p.m. Set up seeder in p.m. Started sowing oats after dinner on 20 acres west of house. Went to pasture in morn after Bess and calf. Smallest calf yet born to my herd. Baby filling out some. March 30 - Sunshine. Sowing oats on west 20 acres and fall plowing North of barn. Dr. Roberts came out. Went to town in cart after dinner for Seeder chain and Timothy seed. 2 bu. Timothy seed 3.50 Sold??? .10 Draged [?] stacks in east field in p.m. and went to town again and got chain. March 31 - Sowed grass seed all day. Went to town at noon for Timothy. Got 3 bu. of Hardware [?] $5.25 Took Mrs. Watt to Boyces. Fine clear day. Warm. Met one [?] Doris bookkeeper. Farmers Elevator. Edna expects to set up to dinner Sunday. April 1 - Disked in oats and Grass north of barn and started on piece west of house in p.m. Father came down. Set out onion sets. Oscar Boyce came after turkeys in eve. A good days work. Billy went down in p.m. Edyna had letter from Josie H. April 2 - Disked in oats west of house. Father came about Bess and harrowed oat ground. Edyna got up in morning and felt good she said. Looked good and acted better. Started weaning Bess calf. Black Jones sow had 5 pigs. Worked Mame for first time this spring. Rape seed 1.00 April 3 - Very cloudy in morn. Gave Edyna bath. Took over myself [?] Went after mail after dinner. Stopped at Watts to see horse and Watt family rode home with me so had company until bedtime. Stormed at 9 p.m. April 4 - My birthday. 28th time. Finished sowing oats in S.E. & N.E. corner. Helped Mother wash in morn. Disked in p.m. Cloudy and warm in morn, clear at noon and cloudy and cold in evening. Covered garden with blankets and set 4 hens. April 5 - Disked in morn & dug oat ground all day. My feet got so cold this morn that I had to come to house and soak 'em. Awful wind all day. April 6 - Got out a little late. Finished dragging oats today. Commenced dragging stacks. Cattle got in to Bill's [?] 80. went after mail in eve. April 7 - Draged stacks in morn and finished sowing rape seed. Raked and burned stalks in p.m. Black heifer Ruby had spotted steer calf in pasture. April 8 - Went to Klines after manure spreader. Hauled manure in morn. Fallon helped. Edyna brought Imogene out to barn for first time. Edna gone after mail in p.m. April 10 - Sunday. Stayed home. A. Waldron & wife came in eve in auto to see baby. Hot and clear. April 11 - Helped wash a little. Hauled 7 loads manure, took spreader to elevator. Went to Krayzers after dinner for [?] Bess and John up in p.m. Got plow greased and started Septemberarator. Nice little shower in eve. Oats coming out need more rain. April 12 - Plowed all day. Mighty lumpy and hard. Father came took Mother home in eve. Edyna went to town in p.m. April 13 - Plowed all day. Maurice went to Boyces in morning for asparagus. Set hen at night in coal house & P.R. [?] April 14 - Plowed all day. Boar got out. Bred our old white sow. Rained a circle around us and sprinkled here in eve. April 15 - Plowed in morn. Enumerator came and was here for dinner. Boyce came at noon and got old sulky plow. Got Arnold and auctioned 200# sow in p.m. Cold and cloudy. Chilly N.W. wind. April 16 - Had Boyce come up to load sow sold to Toyne. Toyne 9 cents 220# 19.20 coal 2.85 took 31 on corn 38 cents 12.00 paid Roberts in full 18.75 Bran and shoots 2.80 Edyna gave new pair gloves. April 17 - Sunday. Stayed home. Very cold and ground white with snow all day. Froze hard at night. Got word by telephone in morning that Will Rich died last night between 9 & 10. April 18 - Still cold and snow. Done washing and had Pound fix well and windmill. $1.00 Cut up hog in p.m. and went to Jones for package from Mandels for Edyna. Put steer in feed bin. April 19 - Finished cutting up hog and helped render lard. Went to Boyce's after saltpeter and churned in p.m. Put Mame in back shed alone. Will Rich buried today. April 20 - Finished plowing after dinner. Went to town to meet 6 Ida, Ella and Mother came for supper. Got supplies of seed corn from Griffen. Black sow had 7 pigs. April 21 - Helped Edna wash little. Cut seed [?] in a.m. and planted in p.m. Maurice helped. Need rain badly. April 22 - Took load of corn to F. Ele[vator], 34.38 $13.08 Took cream to town and eggs. Sent in card to Woodman Lodge. Oil 5 gal .65 spuds 75 cents bu 1.00 soap 15 cau. 3 coff .40 Tobacco .05 Lettuce .10 Put 25 bu. of corn in crib from ground in p.m. Hardest n.w. wind this year. Suit [?] with Woodman card as entrance fee 5.00 April 23 - Awful wind all day. Chopped wood in a.m. and hauled it up in p.m. April 24 - Sunday. Stayed at home. No company. Drove Ben to Boyces. April 25 - Mame had horse colt some time last night. Took Edna to train to go to Glidden at noon. Went after her at night. Got thru doing chores at 11 o'clock. Edyna hat 4.50 camphor .15 April 28 - Disked fall plowing all day. Jones woman over in afternoon. April 29 - Pulled stone in a.m. Pulverized in p.m. Clear, fine day. April 30 - Father came down and helped haul hay all day. 4 loads. Went to town in eve with cream. Groceries .80 Mother came to stubb in eve. May May 1 - J. Innis of Dunlap came in morn and bought Benous and I shipped him out at 10 o'clock Sun. night. May 2 - Took Mother to stubb. Postage & tele. .50 halter & louse killer 1.50 cleaner .25 chick food .25 seeds .50 Helped wash and Butler dehorned 9 cattle 1.00 Took off 10 chicks making 58 off for season so far. May 12 - Went to town. Took eggs and got seed corn. 86# @ 2.00 bu. 3.00 pumpkin seed .10 Planted corn in p.m. and went to Glidden at night to Woodman adoption. May 13 - Got home from Glidden at 7:30. Finished plowing corn at noon. Father came down for corn. Was here for dinner. Black sow had 8 pigs and ate three of them. April 13 - Rung pigs this morning. 46 fall shoats. Raining this morn. = Loafed in p.m. Went to surprise party at Toynes tonight. April 14 - Sunday. Drove to Glidden for dinner. Got wallpaper. Very cold= and windy. April 15 - Started plowing sod this morn. Went to town in eve. for seed= corn. [?] =97.65 April 16 - Plowed sod all day. Maurice sick. Didn't go to school. Have 35= pigs from 6 sows. April 17 - Bred two sows bought of Taylor today. Plowed sod all day. All= went to Ralston at noon for medicine for self and baby. April 30 - Done my ironing and baked bread and cookies. Went to town for= Mrs. Ginn in morning. Done mending after dinner. John plowed. May May 1 - Made soap in morning. Went with Maurice to hang May baskets. The= cross old grannie sow had nine pigs. Saved eight. May 2 - Wind blew hard all day. Mrs. Ginn and Imogene and I went to town in= morning after we got the churning and the work done. Took a little roll of= butter over. Got a slop pail. $1.00 May 3 - Made my last lot of soap. Have made five batches. The last was= fine. Washed my hair in afternoon. Mrs. Ginn went home on No. 6. She= made the Baby two little dresses while here. Engine came today. ~John= went after it after supper. May 4 - Swept house, made cake and pie, killed white duck and dressed him= myself and went to town in eve. Little white sow very sick. Lost all her= pigs. Set three hens. May 5 - Dr. Chance wife and Mother were here for dinner. Had a nice visit. = Set a hen. Biggest(?) fool with feathers. May 6 - Washed and cleaned kitchen and yard. John finished plowing sod and= started to disk. May 7 - Done ironing. Father and Mother came in morning. The men started= the new engine. Seemed to work fine. The hogs broke up hen. Had to set= her over again. Set three more. May 8 - Done a big churning alone. Started to clean cellar. Father here. = Went over to see Imogene H. in afternoon. Got some hop vines. Got home= about five o'clock. May 9 - Had to go to town for something to eat. Didn't have as much in town= as we have here so came home empty. Mame had a fine little horse colt this= morning. Washed buggy, worked in garden, finished cleaning the cellar and= sewed today. Feel a little older than I did yesterday. [Edna continues.] June June 1 - John papered the pantry and went to elevator after dinner. Band= had first concert tonight. Too muddy for us to go. June 2 - I went to Sunday School in morning and to see Hamiltons in= afternoon. June 3 - I washed alone. Set out fifty tomato and cabbage plants, done a= few other little jobs and went home with Father about four o'clock. John= came up in eve. to band practice. Got home very late. John and Father= finished planting in the corn today. John dragged in afternoon.=20 June 4 - Ironed this morning. John finished dragging and started to plow= corn. June 5 - Swept the house and cleaned up. Had a good rain today. June 6 - Am having a bad time with the toothache. June 7 - School ended for the summer today at noon. Took Maurice and Grace= Watt to town today to a Sunday School picnic. They had a fine time. June 8 - We went to Glidden this evening. Very cold. Today was Mother's= birthday. June 9 - Sunday - Came home from Glidden this morn. John and I were both= sick. John went to town after medicine after dinner. June 10 - Washed alone. So cold had to wash in house. Went to Glidden in= eve. Did not get home til one o'clock. June 11 - Done a big ironing and got the house cleaned up. Mr. Anderson= from Boone was here in afternoon. John finished plowing corn first time. June 12 - Father and Mother here today and Lena Jones and Blanche Thomas= here in afternoon. June 13 - Rained all night. We had five helping use. 23 - Guy Gregory moved his piano and he asked Daddy to come and help him,= Daddy helped him. When Daddy got to Glidden he had to take Robert Smith's= piano to. Today is Wednesday and is a very nice day. To-day also is John= Quincy Adams died to-day. 24 - Thursday. Today is the day that the eight grade have their= examinations. The kids were very excited.
