Schumacher Dies After Protracted Illness In Feeble Health for Many Weeks and Finally Succumbs at Home on Carroll Street, Sunday Morning. John F. Schumacher was born in Germany, September 29, 1844, and died in Carroll, Iowa, after a prolonged illness, on Sunday morning, September 1, 1918, aged 73 years, 11 months, 2 days. He was the youngest of a family of four children. When he was but a few years of age, his parents left Germany for America, and settled near Chicago, Illinois. Here they lived until he grew to manhood. On November 26, 1856, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Brust. They lived in Illinois until the early eighties, when they moved to Iowa, settling upon a farm about four miles east of Carroll. Here they lived for seven years, then moved in town. For a few years he engaged in business in Carroll, then retired and lived in the city until his death. Eight children came to bless the home, three of whom, with their mother, have passed into the other life. Those living are: Will, of Pine City, Minnesota; Mrs. F. M. Hanby, of Carroll; John, of Lanesboro; Bertha, of Carroll, and Arthur, of Watertown, South Dakota. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge, and the even tenor of his life testified to his faithfulness in the church of which he was a long time member. Not only his loved ones, but the community at large held him in the deepest reverence and feel a real loss in his taking away. -------Interesting contradictions - obituary says they were married on Nov. 26, 1856, J.F. would have been 12 at the time. Elizabeth's obituary said they were married Nov. 6, 1868. Her obituary would probably be more accurate as information was probably given by him instead of a family member.
