With the advent of automobiles, the line's passenger and freight traffic dwindled greatly, so sometime in the 1920's this this car was built and put into service to save the U.S. mail contract, haul light freight, and transport what few passengers still used the Atlantic Northern for transportation into Atlantic and Elk Horn. The Atlantic Northern finally abandoned the line and took the rails up in 1936. Traces of the old right-of-way can still be seen along the former A.N. route.
