Many had already settled in Illinois and when the border into Iowa open in 1836, they crossed the river. It would be very wise to check surrounding counties as many of these names appear in those counties as well. In 1858 the railroad reached Cedar County and the German settlers, fresh from Germany or Schleswig-Holstein, came in the late 1850's and 1860's. By the 1880's many of the towns, such as Lowden, were entirely German to the point that the English languages wasn't used or spoken. Many of the English and Irish settlers had moved on such as the Parr family, the founding family of Lowden, who moved to South Dakota. Surname First Name Year Township ALBIN Mrs. 1836 . BAKER Rev.
