Obituary of George DeWald of Cedar County, Iowa ------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are two obituaries for George DeWald on this page. Source #1: Pioneer Press Newspaper, Mechanicsville, IA, December 6, 1929 GEORGE DeWALD George DeWald is called in Death Funeral Services will be held Friday Afternoon at Methodist Church. George DeWald passed away at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday morning after an illness extending over a period of years. For the past several months, Mr. DeWald has been bed-ridden. He was seventy-two years and he has resided in this community practically all his life. He is an old newspaper publisher, having been in the Business for about eighteen years. Mr. DeWald's obituary will be published in next weeks issue of the Pioneer Press. The funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon from the Methodist church. Rev Scott will conduct the services and burial will be made in the Mechanicsville cemetery. Mr. DeWald's son, Lawrence, of Oklahoma City arrived Thursday evening. Source #2 believed to be: Pioneer Press Newspaper, Mechanicsville, IA, December 14, 1929 (obit was cut out without source data and is in Mechanicsville Library) Lingering Illness Caused His Death Funeral Held Friday Afternoon at 2 O'clock The funeral of Mr. George DeWald who passed away at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday morning after a lingering illness was held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Methodist church, Rev R. C. Scott officiating. Mr. DeWald was 72 years of age and this had been his home for most of his life time. OBITUARY George W. DeWald was born in Northampton County, Pennsylvania on March 10, 1857. Here he spent his early boyhood and it was during these year that he was baptized in the Lutheran faith. When about twelve years of age he with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Miller and two sisters and one brother of the DeWald family and one half brother, R. T. Miller moved to Iowa with Mechanicsville as their direction. The other three brothers of the Miller family being born in this vicinity, all growing to manhood and womanhood here. The following years were spent in and around Mechanicsville. On November 1883 he was married to L. Dora Harrison of the Morley vicinity. To this union were born four children, one daughter dying at the age of three years. Soon after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. DeWald moved to Council Grove, Kansas, after a few years, moving from there to Waterville, Washington. After seven years spent in Washington the family moved back to Council Grove, Kansas where Mr. DeWald entered in to the printing business, conducting a weekly newspaper for several years. Selling out his business there he with his family moved to Grand Junction, IA., where he again entered the printing business. Living there for several years, when he again sold his printing business and with his family moved to Mechanicsville, which has since been their home. For many months Mr. DeWald had been in failing health, of late his decline being quite rapid, until early in the morning of Wednesday December 4, he slipped from this life into the life beyond, aged 72 years, 8 months and 24 days. Left to mourn the passing of a loved one are: the wife; three sons, Chauncey C. and Valentine H. of Mechanicsville, and Lawrence L. of Oklahoma City; five grandchildren, Florence, Woodrow, Leon, Betty and Jack; one sister, Mrs. Manford Jones of Madrid Iowa; one brother, John DeWald of Mechanicsville; four half brothers, Frank and R. T. Miller of California and J. H. Miller of Cedar Rapids; also a large group of friends. One sister, Mrs. Ella Gunn, passing away several years ago. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Miller, son Car and daughter Avis, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Will Coyne of Cedar Rapids; Dr. Harold Jones of Mason City, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Daubenmier of Mt. Vernon, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Kutz of Lisbon, Mrs. Clarissa Byers of Clinton, Mr. and Mrs. George Lehr an son of Anamosa are relatives from out of town, attending the funeral of the Late G.
