CLINTON - Glen Grace, 23, athletic coach at Swaledale consolidated school (Cerro Gordo, Iowa) was killed early Sunday on a highway accident six miles west of here. Grace was returning from Sterling, Ill., to Bennett, where his parents, reside, when his car left the road, then swung back to side-swipe a truck. OTHER DRIVER NOT HURT State highway patrolmen said he probably fell asleep at the wheel. His auto left the road, then swung back, sideswiping a transport truck traveling in the opposite direction. Lester Luther, 21, of Walkerton, Ind., driver of the truck, was uninjured. Grace was rushed to Jane Lamb hospital here where he died an hour after the accident of a basal skull fracture. WAS HONOR STUDENT He was graduated last spring from Upper Iowa university at Fayette and was secretary-treasurer of his senior class. He played on the college baseball team as shortstop and was active in dramatics and singing. He was an honor student in commercial subjects in college and was serving as commercial teacher at Swaledale. Grace had been visiting his parents at Bennett during spring vacation and was returning there from Sterling, Ill., where he had been to take a girl friend home. The accident occurred at 1:30 a.m. and Grace died 40 minutes later at a Clinton hospital. The body was taken to a Davenport mortuary. Grace is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Grace, and a sister, Cathryn. HAD OUTSTANDING RECORD IN SWALEDALE SWALEDALE - Glen Grace, Swaledale high school athletic coach, who was killed in an automobile accident Sunday morning near Clinton, had an outstanding record as mentor for the local basketball team. Coach Grace's high school basketball team won both the Cerro Gordo county conference championship and the county boys' tournament title this past season. The squad was also a semifinals contender in Class B sectional tournament play at Clear Lake, losing to the champion Plymouth team. Services will be held Tuesday at Dixon, Ill. Swaledale school will be closed until Wednesday because of the funeral of Coach Grace. Two busloads carrying Swaledale students will go to Dixon Tuesday morning to attend Coach Grace's funeral. Sheriff's officers and highway patrolmen will escort them to the county line, and they will be escorted the entire route by other highway patrolmen, according to word received here by Sheriff Tim Phalen. - Mason City Globe-Gazette, Monday, April 3, 1939, p. 2, col. 3-4 with picture of Glen Grace. Grace, Swaledale high school coach who was killed in an automobile accident near Clinton last Sunday. Burial was in Dixon cemetery.
