Born on a plantation near Cynthiana, Ky., Smith bolted to freedom in 1862, after his master had completed arrangements to sell him and three of his 12 brothers and sisters. Going to live with an uncle in Paris, Ky., he assumed his messenger's job with the fourteenth Kentucky cavalry soon after, and went through major engagements at Cumberland Gap, Fort Sumter, and the second battle of Bull Run.
