He was born in Germany in 1838; came to America in 1864, and engaged in wagon making and the hardware business in Jackson county, Ia., in 1872; removed to Marcus in 1877. He at present is town trustee of that place. He married Margaret Smith, of Germany, in 1867. They have five children—Joseph, Kate, Bennie, Laura and George.
