M. Smith, of the firm of H. Assman & Co., dealers in staple and fancy groceries, was born in Pa. in 1838; removed to Sioux City, Ia., in 1868; thence to Cherokee in 1872, and engaged in farming until engaging in above business, which was established in 1870. He served in the army in the 78th Pa. Inft.; was promoted to captain, major and the lieutenant colonel; received his discharge at Nashville, Tenn. He married Maggie Stephens, of Pa., and has four children—Leota, Leona, Roy and Meda.
