He moved to Clay county in 1871; located at Spencer, and opened the first grocery store in the town. There were only four business houses in the town, and he, with his wife, lived for some time in a tent. He has been engaged in the grocery business since coming to the place until the first of the present year, 1882. Mr. Carleton spent several years as a sailor, and has visited various countries.
