Smith, dealer in general merchandise, came to Spencer from Wis. in 1871, and engaged in his present business. There were only about fifty persons in the town when he came, and he was the third man to put in a stock of general merchandise. He started in the same building which he now occupies, which at that time was 30x20 feet, but which by reason of additions, is now eighty-two feet in length. He carries a stock worth from ten to twelve thousand dollars.
