    Jackson Sentinel, November 20, 1902

    GILROY-At his home near Lost Nation, 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 15, 1902, James
Gilroy, Sr., aged 80 years and 7 mos.

    Mr. Gilroy was one of Iowa's pioneer residents. He was born in County Mayo,
Ireland, near the seacoast in 1822 and came to America in 1842, settling first
in Orange County, New York. In 1852 he came west to Maquoketa and the second day
after his arrival bought a large tract of land from the government near Lost
Nation. He remained in Maquoketa that winter and tended the masons who built the
"Beehive" for J. E. Goodenow. In 1853 he began improving his land with the aid
of Rose Hart, whom he married October 13, 1860. He developed the fine farm where
he has since resided. To this union were born eleven children, nine of whom
survive, namely: James F. Gilroy, Mrs. M. W. Burnette, John Gilroy, Mrs. Ann
Skelly, Peter, Agnes, Frank, Rose and Ella. Mrs. Gilroy also survives to mourn
his loss.

    The funeral took place from Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Lost Nation on
Monday forenoon, Father McCoby of Oxford Junction, Father Bowen of Delmar and
Father McNamara of Toronto officiated. The interment took place in the church
cemetery.
