Susan Elizabeth Harrison was born October 22, 1843, in Great Stepping, Lincolnshire, England. She is the last of her family, three dying in infancy and five living to mature years. At the age of 14 she was confirmed in the Episcopel or Church of England. She lived in the vicinity of Stepping until her marriage to Herman Spence, August 16, 1863. To this union were born six children, four of whom are living: Ada Hensman of Boston, England; Eliza Long of Monmouth, Iowa; Herman Spence of Johannesburg, South Africa, and Eva Starling of Lost Nation, Iowa. The death of her husband after 15 years of wedded life, left her with the care of the children to provide for and train for life's usefulness. In 1893, Mrs. Spence came with her children to Lost Nation, her brother and wife preceding her by a number of years. She has ever since made her home and had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. In April of 1907, while Rev. J. J. Kidder was pastor, she united with the Methodist Episcopel Church, and whenever able she has attended the services of that denomination. She discontinued housekeeping two years ago and has since lived with her two daughters, Mrs. Long and Mrs. Starling. Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. C. C. Cleveland, Sunday afternoon at 2:00. Pallbearers were Messrs. Rutenbeck, Stevenson, Able, Kammer, Paris and Appleton.
