Mr. Torpey was born in Canada, September 10, 1834, and was married there in Augusr, 1857 to Elizabeth Fahey. The family continued to reside in Canada until the Spring of 1866 when they removed to Iowa, residing on a farm near Lost Nation. Here the home continued until about 12 years ago when a new home was purchased in Lost Nation, in which the family has since resided. Mr. Torpey was the father to 11 children, all of whom have grown to maturity, although many of them have moved to distant fields of endeavor. They are Michael, Roger, Bridget and Theresa of Douglas, Arizona; Mrs. J. Quirk of Oxford Junction, Iowa; Mrs. S. Burke of Kimball, South Dakota; Mrs. Neary of Cedar Bluff, South Dakota; James of New Hampton, Iowa; Helen, Elizabeth and William of Lost Nation. The wife and companion of many years survives. The funeral occurred Monday forenoon from the church of Sacred Heart, Lost Nation, where a solemn requiem high mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Small, assisted by Rev. J. Ryan, deacon, Rev. W. J. Torpey, son of deceased, sub-deacon, Rev. J. Wolf, master of ceremonies and Father O'Connell. A very able funeral oration was delivered by Father Small. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery in Lost Nation.
