And besides the above, four inquests were held by magistrates at Clinton, Calamus and Delmar, during the two years — suicide, accident, etc. Of the 66 cases coming under the action of the Coroner, there were 17 drownings, 15 railroad accidents, 13 deaths from natural causes, 8 suicides, 3 (or more) murders, and 8 fatalities of various causes. Omitting the 13 deaths from natural causes, and within two years Clinton county’s tragedies numbered 57! Yes, a Coroner is an important official in this community, and with his documents should be in an accessible location or expect Justices of the Peace to discharge a great part of the duties of the position.
