Collecting the necessary information and placing the markers is the task of the various county offices of the Soldiers Relief Commission. It is the duty of Mr. Curtis Murphy, Executive Secretary of the Dallas County Soldiers Relief Commission, Dallas County Courthouse, Adel, Iowa to handle this service for Dallas County, Iowa. He secures a copy of the information relative to the veteran from the undertaker in charge of the burial. He keeps a copy of this information in his office and forewards a copy to the Armed Forces Graves Registration, a division of the Adjutant General's Office, Des Moines, Iowa. Mr. Murphy reports that in the 11 years that he has been in office that he has visited all of the cemeteries in Dallas County in an effort to locate all of the soldier's graves and see that a marker is in place. Upon receipt of sufficient proof relating to the burial of a veteran unknown to his office, Mr. Murphy indicates that marker will be placed at the gravesite. In visiting with Mr. Murphy one cannot help but feel tht his interest goes far beyond the necessity of his office. He has said that he would welcome correspondence with anyone interested in soldier dead buried within the county and would, "help it anyway that I can". He reports that he has on file the records of over 700 Civil War soldiers including some of those who served in the Confederate Army.
