Graney learned of her death which occurred at her home on Tuesday. Mary Sheehan was born in county Kerry, parish Killorgan (sic - s/b Killorglin), Ireland, on August 11, 1831. She came to America in 1849 landing in New York. She was married to Patrick J. Graney at Indianapolis Feb. 14, 1851**. They came to Iowa and Dallas county in June, 1855, and resided here ever since. The cabin they built for their humble home that year was the sixth cabin built in Spring Valley township. They were a thrifty, prosperous couple, accumulated property and raised a nice family. They lived on the farm until 1893 when they moved to their home in Perry on 6th and Patten streets. Mrs. Graney lost her companion by death three years ago, and almost immediately she began ailing. The cause of her death was a complication of diseases. Her illness unusually hard to bear because of having to remain in a sitting position most of the time, even to the end. Her husband, two sons and one daughter preceded her through the shadow of death but seven children survive her. They are Mrs. E. F. Walsh, Con Graney, Mrs. J. C. O'Malley, P. G. Graney, Mrs. W. T. Murphy, T. G. Graney and D. Graney, all of whom live in or near Perry. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Cornelius Murphy, of Memphis, Tenn., and two brothers, Dan Sheehan of Des Moines, and Pat Sheehan of this vicinity. The funeral services will be conducted at St. Patrick's church at 11 o'clock tomorrow [Friday] morning. The deceased was a devoted christian woman. Her life work was richly adorned with deeds of charity and kindness. She was all a mother could be as is evidenced by the good, worthy family of children, she was able to rear and train to be honored and respected citizens of our community; and we do not know of any higher tribute than this that can be paid to any one. Hundreds of friends mourn with the family and sympathize with them in the loss of a noble mother. - - - "The Perry Adverstiser" Perry, Dallas Co., Iowa Friday, December 8, 1899 pg. 4 Death of Mrs. Graney Mrs. Patrick J. Graney died at her home in this city Tuesday, after a long illness full of pain and suffering, which was borne with patience and fortitude. She was a noble wife and mother, her children the community uniting to honor her memory. The funeral occurred this Friday forenoon at 11 o'clock, and was attended by a very large crowd, many coming from a distance to pay tribute to their regard for the deceased. Mary Sheehan was born in county Kerry, Ireland, August 11, 1831. She came to America in 1849, and was married to Patrick J. Graney in Indianapolis, Ind. in 1854. They came to Dallas county the next year, being among the earliest settlers in this community, and resided here together until the death of the husband a few years ago. There were born to them ten children, of whom seven survive. They are Mrs. E. F. Walsh, Con Graney, Mrs. J. C. O'Malley, P. J. Graney, Mrs. W. T. Murphy, T. J. Graney and D. Graney, all residing in or near this city. Additional Comments: ** Other sources show they married February 14, 1854. I have not confirmed with original yet. Based on the information I have on their children, I tend to believe the 1854 date is the correct one.
