For forty years Patrick J. Graney has lived a quiet unostentatious life in Perry and Spring Valley Township, when on yesterday morning at 5:30 o'clock the angel of death pressed his eyelids down and he fell on that sleep from which there is no earthly waking. Mr. Graney had reached his 78th year, and had won for himself an honorable record as a straight- forward citizen. By economical thrift he had accumulated a large competence, and was one of the wealthiest men of the county. He was one of Perry's most substantial men, and with kindly heart and generous hand stood ever ready to succor the needy and befriend the destitute. It might be truly said of Patrick Graney "that the elements were so mixed in him, that all the world might stand by his open coffin and say with truth 'here lies a true man." Mr. Graney was born in Castle Island, county Kearry (sic - s/b Castleisland, county Kerry), Ireland, and came to American soon after attaining manhood, settling in Indiana in 1846 where he lived until 1855, when he removed to this township, where he made his home and where his remains will rest in peace until the last trump. His widow and seven sorrowing children have the deepest sympathy of the entire community - to whom he was well known and loved. The funeral will take place on Friday morning at ten o'clock from the Catholic church, Father Murphy officiating - - - Friday morning, October 30, 1896 Mr. Jno. Graney and family, of Des Moines, are here to attend the funeral of Mr. P. G. Graney (sic - s/b P. J. Graney). - - - Saturday morning, October 31, 1896 Pg. 3 The funeral services of the late Patrick J. Graney were held yesterday at St. Patrick's church, conducted by Father Murphy. There were a large number of acquaintances present from abroad and from all over the county. The large turnout was a fitting testimonial to the high character of the deceased. Had it not been for the very disagreeable weather, there undoubtedly would have been the largest turnout ever witnessed at a funeral in this county. Additional Comments: Descendants of Patrick J.
