The following was written by my grandfather, Everett Chandler to his son Paul, my father. This was written in 1943. "The Chandler family had quite a part in the early development of Iowa. Your great Grandfather, Elihu Chandler, my grandfather, was born in Maine. In 1832 he came West to Illinois where he helped erect a fort as a defense against the Indians. In 1834 he came to Burlington, Iowa and helped lay out Jefferson St. At that time there were only a few log houses. Late in 1834 he purchased 320 acres of rough hilly land from the government, 18 miles west of Burlington for $1.25 per acre. He choose this site so that he could have wood to burn and wild game, which was plentiful at that time, for food. He made many trips to Burlington with a team of Oxen, leaving early in the morning and returning at 2AM the next morning. He married Jemima Dobson, a widow with four children, this couple had two children, your grandfather, James S. Chandler who was born August 30, 1836 and died July 23, 1908, and a sister Olive. Your grandfather was a man of sterling habits and absolute integrity deeply religious and true to his convictions in every sense of the word. He had a very limited education, yet he could repeat many, many quotations from the Bible, letter perfect, and clothed his prayers with beautiful language. Your grandmother, whose name was Luicetta Miller, was the first white child born in Pleasant Grove Township, Henry County, Iowa. Date of her birth was June 25, 1836 she died March 22, 1928. She was a very quiet hard working woman with all the qualities of the early pioneer her family was her first interest. The major part of the raising of the family was her responsibility as father was in the live stock business and this took him from home most of the time."
