He was a young man 20 years of age, and committed the crime under the influence of spirituous liquor. Let his fate be a warning to those who indulge in its use,-remember that he was once a moderate drinker. He remained through the trial, indifferent to his fate, but when the verdict was pronounced which consigned him to the gallows, he is said to have wept bitterly. Davenport Gazette, Davenport, Iowa Territory December 16, 1841 SENTENCE COMMUTED Governor Chambers has commuted the sentence of Hyde, the murderer of Murray, to seven years confinement in the Penitentiary. The circumstances under which the deed was committed, and the extreme youth of the prisoner-who is yet a minor-certainly should entitle him to consideration.
