Daniel Cort, of Zwingle, expired in his chair at his writing desk, on Tuesday, April 30th. He was 81 years, 5 months and 29 days of age and a pioneer settler of Dubuque county. Mr. Cort has always been a useful member in the community, giving much of his time to public affairs. He had filled the office of justice of the peace, school director and member of the board of supervisors, which office he held for seven years, and it is said that his services as a committee to settle with a defaulting county treasurer saved the county at one time the sum of $83,000. He was elected to the legislature in 1856 and again in 1864. It is told that during Mr. Cort's incumbency a great railway swindle was attempted; the scheme being to grant four railroads a large lot of land and exempt them from taxation. Mr. Cort fought the scheme strenuously and furnished the "proviso" that saved the state millions of dollars. He was an uncle of Mrs. E. M, Kearney, of Cascade township, who attended the funeral.
