His early education was recieved in that city, in 1872 he graduated from the college of the city of New York. He spent some time in a law office there, soon entered the Union Theological Seminary, graduating in 1875, and ordained to the ministry of the Presbyterian Church 5 Oct 1875. The same year he became the pastor of the Presbyterian church at Fairmount, N.J., where he remained for two years, during which he married Miss Mary Woods Crater. In 1877 he was pastor at the Presbyterian church at West Union, Iowa, where he remained until 1886. On 2 Mar 1886 he was installed Pastor at the First Presbyterian church in Dubuque. In 1904 he resigned the charge of this church and accepted a professorship in the German Theologial School of the Northwest, now called the University of Dubuque. From 1904 to 1908 he was president of the college, and from 1908 until his death president of the faculty. He died Saturday 27 May 1922 in his room in the university dormitory He planned his own funeral services, before he died. His body will lie in state Tuesday, from 10 until 5, the hour set for the services. Following the services the remains will be taken to the train and sent to Brooklyn, New York, there to rest besides Doctor Ruston's wife and son.
