Michael Slattery, Veteran Blacksmith, Dead

Michael Slattery, the well known blacksmith, died at his home in Bernard at
10:00 a.m., Saturday October 18th, from the infirmities of old age. Mr. Slattery
was a son of Patrick and Mary Slattery and was born at Ennis, County Clare,
Ireland. September 29, 1842. He was married to Bridget Wright at Ennis and came
to Bernard in 1883 and established his blacksmith shop a few years after the
railroad was completed. Mr. Slattery had learned his trade in Ireland and was
one of the best mechanics in his line of work throughout the community.
Customers came from miles around and it was customary for him to receive a
dollar or more a set for horse-shoeing than at any other place.  He had a system
of steeling shoes that was found superior to any of his competitors in any
sections. He was a man of powerful physique and form. In early days when
throwing the sledge hammer was a great pastime he put all would be champions in
the shade by his feat in throwing the hammer. He frequently kept his shop open
until one o’clock in the morning to accommodate his customers. He was also a
well read man and took a lively interest in public affairs, especially political
conditions and was an uncompromising Democrat.

Mr. Slattery’s wife died in 1908 and he is survived by a son, Michael, Jr. of
Bernard and a daughter, Mrs. Roger Driscoll of Chicago. The funeral  services 
for Mr. Slattery were held Monday morning, October 20th from the home to St.
Patrick’s church, Garry Owen. The solemn high mass was celebrated buy Rev. John
P. Connell of St. Aloysius church, South Garry Owen assisted by Rev. Father
Placid of New Melleray and Rev. John Hehir of Temple Hill. The pallbearers were
W. J. Melloy, William Dwyer, Dennis McDonnell, Patrick Brady, Matt Fagan and
Charles W. Smythe
