He came to Elmira, N.Y., in 1831, and, to Dubuque in 1855. He opened one of the most elegant fancy and notion stores ever conducted in the city, which had a brief and prosperous existence, having been destroyed by fire shortly after it had got fully under way. The business was reopene(d) near the corner of Main and Fifth Street and continued until 1857 when it again went down in the financial crash of that year. At this time Mr. Woolnough was elected a member of the city council. From the time of his business failure, he was cramped in a financial sense, and had never recuperated his lost fortune. He was a plasterer by trade, and in the hour of his necessity, fell back upon his nerve and industry, and has suceeded always in making a comfortable living and in commanding the respect and confidence of his friends and the community, as an upright business man, a genial associate, a warm hearted friend, a kind and considerate husband and father. Mr. Woolnough was a member of Metropolitan lodge, No. 49, and his funeral will be under direction of the Masonic fraternity. The service will take place at the Christian church to-day at 2 o'clock, p. m.
