Genevieve, MO 6/26/1897 WOMEN KILLED IN A RUNAWAY Dubuque, Io., June 21 --- The most frightful accident in Dubuque for many years occurred this morning, resulting in the death of two most estimable ladies. Mrs. D. D. Myers, Mrs. Maria Jones Hay and Mrs. Clara H. Scott, wife of Henry Scott, 1351 Lexington avenue, Chicago, were returning from the funeral service of a sister of charity at Mount Carmel. As the party turned on to Chestnut street the hold-break strap broke, and the horse, which was somewhat vicious, became unmanageable. Mrs. Myers made frantic efforts to stop the animal without avail. Her cries attracted the neighbors, but they were powerless to stop the frightened brute. At the junction of Prairie street, Mrs. Myers was thrown out, but she held on to the lines and was dragged some distance before they were torn from her hands. She was badly bruised, but her injuries are not serious. When Mrs. Myers was thrown out there was no one to restrain the frightened horse. Mrs. Scott and Mrs. Hay pale as death, sat in the carriage imploring for aid. In a moment the wheel, which was covered with a rubber tire, encountered some obstacle, and Mrs. Hay was thrown out. She bounded into the air, and fell on her head, breaking her neck and crushing her skull. She was dead when picked up. In a moment Mrs. Scott was also thrown from the carriage. As the horse reached the turn on Highland place the wheel struck the curb. She went up several feet, and fell on her side. Her head and side were crushed in, and she was instantly killed. The horse tumbled over a wall in the rear of Lawyer Hurd's residence, and was killed. Mrs. Hay was a daughter of the late Gen. G. W. Jones and was the wife of Dr. Hay, of Racine - - Globe Democrat Additional Comments: I am researching the George Wallace Jones family.
