WILLIAM LEO BIRKHOLZ William Leo Birkholz, proprietor of a well-kept farm of two hundred forty acres in Rudd township, this county, is a native of the neighboring state of Wisconsin, but has been a resident of this county since he was three years of age. He was born on February, 14,1870, son of August and Ernestina (Birkholtz) Birkholz, Germans, who came to this country about 1867 and located in Wisconsin where they resided unti1 1873, when they came over into Iowa and settled on a farm south of Charles City, in this county. They later moved to a farm east of the village of Rudd, where they made their home until their retirement from the farm and removal to Charles City, where they are now living. They are members of the German Lutheran church and their children were reared in that faith. There are five of these children, those besides the subject of this sketch, the first-born, being Frank, who is farming east of Rudd; Ida, who lives south of Charles City, and Charles and Louise, of Charles City. Reared on the home farm in Rudd Township, William L. Birkholz grew to manhood there, receiving his schooling in the local schools, and in due time began farming there on his own account, later moving to Rockford Township and thence back to Rudd Township, where he bought the farm of two hundred and forty acres on which he is now living and where he and his family are very comfortably situated. Mr .Birkholz is a member of the board of directors of the Farmers Elevator Company at Rudd and is one of the directors of the consolidated school at that place. In 1894 William L. Birkholz was united in marriage to Anna Metz, who was born on a pioneer farm east of Rockford, daughter of Jacob Metz and wife, early settlers of this county, and to this union four children have been born, Mabel, Florence, Leo and (living). Mr. and Mrs. Birkholz are members of the Lutheran church and take a proper interest in church work, as well as in the general good works of the community in which they live. He is a school director . ____________________________________________________________________
