Gerald LAUGHERY, auctioneer. ------- Observe Golden Wedding Anniversary on Sunday The Golden Wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. B.C. KIRKWOOD of Eyota, Minnesota will be observed on December 2nd with open house from two to five p.m. at the Methodist church in Guthrie Center. All friends and relatives of the couple are invited to attend this special event. No invitational cards have been sent out by the couple. They were former residents of Guthrie Center. ------- OLDEST NON-NATIVE GUTHRIAN IS DEAD Luke BAKER, 92, died at his home in Guthrie Center Friday morning after a lingering illness. At the Guthrie County Centennial Celebration this summer, Mr. Baker was recognized as the oldest non-native resident of the county. He was born at Lena, Illinois, on January 23, 1859. He spent most of his life farming and, at one time, operated a store in North Branch. Survivors include: a daughter, Mr. Rae SEBERT; a sister, Mrs. Agnes COVAULT of Atlantic; a foster son, Frank PHELPS of Alhambra, Calif; grandchildren: Frank SEBERT of Exira and Mrs. Larry SEAMAN of Milwaukee, Wisc. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p. m. from Bowman Chapel. Services were conducted by Rev. L.C. MCDonald. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. ***************************************************** SERVICE NOTES Pfc Robert L. TAYLOR, who is stationed at Camp Atterbury, Ind., visited recently in the home of his mother, Mrs. Berthat Taylor of Bagley. He is slated for duty in Europe. ------- Dean DRESBACK, Bagley, is home on a 45 day furlough. He has been in Korea for nearly three years. ------- Roland H SNOWGREN USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elise Davis of Jamaica, has been advanced in rate to fireman aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex in the Far East. SNOWGREN entered the Naval service August 24, 1950, and received his recruit training at the U.S. Naval Training Center in San Diego, Calif. Before entering the Navy, he attended Franklin Consolidated high school at Cooper. ------- Sgt Claude L. DEVILBISS returned to Fort Knox, Kentucky, last week after being called to Guthrie Center for the funeral of his brother, Leroy, and also the death of his aunt, Ella BENNER of Panora. ------- Pvt. Richard CONRAD, son of Mr. Art CONRAD 201 North Second, Guthrie Center, is nearing completion of a 16-week training cycle at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., with a unit of the 6th Armored Division. As a trainee, he received 8-weeks engineer training. At the end of the 14-week training cycle, with the "Super Smith", the men completing training will be sent either to specialist schools or sent as replacements to other units. At present, Pvt. Conrad is home on furlough in Guthrie Center. ------- 1st Lt. Charles S. WHETSTONE, son of Mrs. Nellie WHETSTONE of Casey, is now located at Freidburg, Germany, about 300 miles from Berline. He is connected with the service battery at the 20th Battalion. His address is: Sv. Brty, 20th Battalion, APO 39, c-o Postmaster, N.Y., N.Y. -------- Rayfield E. MOSES, who is in the Navy and on the U.S.S Manchester, has left Long Beach, California, for Korean waters. Rayfield was home for a few days month ago. This will the second trip across for the Bagley sailor. -------- Sgt. Russell BIXBY, who been radio operator and instructor at Camp Carson, Colo. has been transferred to Camp McCoy, Wis., as chief radio operator. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Bixby of Guthrie Center. -------- Ralph SMOUSE, ISN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Miles SMOUSE of Bayard, has arrived home for a 12-day leave. He has been stationed on a ship in the Pacific for several months. He had an opportunity to fly home from Honolulu, Hawaii, and arrived here in 32 hours. When his visit is concluded, he will report to a new ship at San Diego, Calif.
