McCann Uncle Geo. McCann, as his neighbors familiarly call him, was taken sick on Saturday, and Sunday at six a.m. he breathed his last. He was on the street Friday, as well as usual. His usual health of several years has been very frail, owing to his advanced age. He appears to have taken a severe cold and congestion of the lungs followed. Geo. McCann was one of our oldest and best citzens. He came here from Chicago in 1871 and built a store building on east Nassau street and in April of that year he opened up in business, having for a partner M. Ryan, who also his nephew. Uncle George continued in business fro a few months at that time and then retired from mercantile pursuits for a time, and gave his attention to building and looking after other property intrests. But at intervals he engaged in mercantile business again. He has been public spirited and active and has done much for the up-building of our town. But few men who have lived here have won the love and respect of all more than Uncle Geo. McCann has. He was never married and since residing in Stuaret his sister, Mrs. Masterson, has kept house for him and carefully cared for him and looked after his every want. The deceased was born in Tuyron County, Ireland, and would have been 77 years of age had he lived until March 19th. The funeral occurred Tuesday morning from the Catholic church. Father Foley officiation. He was buried from mass. Father foley preached a very appreciative servom, recalling the 22 years ago, when he first came to Stuart, Geo. McCann met him on the depot platform and extended to him the welcome hand. He has ever since been one of his most loyal and generous supporters in his work, frequently doubling his suscription when Father Foley found the necessities of the church were pressing. The Funeral service was largely attended by the old neighbors of the deceased althought the weather was ibtterly cold. The deceased leaves besides his sister and faithful housekeeper, Mrs. Masterson, another sister, Mrs. Whitfield and three nephews, M.P. and Geo. Ryan, George and John Whitfield and a married sister, Mrs. McBride, who lives in Chicago. At the funeral six nephews acted as pall-bearers--Michael, Patrick and Geo. Ryan and Geo. Whitfield and gran nephews, Geo. Ryan, Jr. and John Ryan.
