He had suffered a heart attack. Mr. Melby, who was 81, was found by members of the family who came with Sunday dinner. He had lived in the Soldier and Dunlap communities most of his life and was a member of Soldier Lutheran church. Pastor Harry Sorensen officiated at the service. Mrs. Norman C. Hanson sang “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” Mrs. Harry Andersen was organist. Interment was in Soldier Valley cemetery under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home. Bearers were Darrell Andrews, Ronald Hull, Roger Melby, Marvin Melby, Paul Weber and Duane Melby. Mr. Melby was born at Soldier November 27, 1882. He married Lena Evenson August 30, 1906 at Onawa. He farmed in the Soldier area most of his life. Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Richie Andrews of Moorhead, Mrs. Gilma Burson of Council Bluffs, Mrs. Claude Price of Sioux City and Mrs. Earl Weber and Mrs. Leo Hull, both of Dunlap; five sons, Kenneth, Arnold and Willard, all of Dunlap, Leonard of Moorhead and Dale of Woodbine; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Evenson and Mrs. Oscar Wingate, both of Soldier; one brother, John Melby of Soldier; 41 grandchildren and 39 great grndchildren(sic).
