William Matthews Obituray, Salem, Henry County, Iowa ---------------------------------------------------- from Salem newspaper 1892 Another Pioneer Gone At 8:30 p.m., August 10th, Wm. Matthews, another of Henry county's pioneers, passed over the mystic river at the advanced age of eighty-one years, eleven months, and nine days. He was born in Green county, Kentucky, September 1, 1810. His father being opposed to slavery removed to Indiana while William was yet a boy. After the death of his father, his widowed mother moved to Jacksonville, Ill., where William grew to manhood. In 1836 he came to Iowa secured a claim and returned to Illinois where on October 17, of the same year he was married to Miss Nellie Holmes. The next day after marriage the young people started for Black Hawk's purchase, where a happy wedded life of more than fifty years was begun. Mr. Matthews proved himself an industrious and enterprising citizen. Beginning at the bottom he, through years of toil and the aid of an energetic and economical helpmate, succeeded in gathering about a goodly share of property. In religion he was a Methodist, having been a member of that denomination for many years. In politics he was a republican. He had been identified with the fraternity of Masons since 1852. Quite a number of the order were present taking charge of the remains and the usual service of the order was observed at the grave. A large gathering of old friends and aquaintances were present at the funeral services which were held at the Methodist church at 10:30 a.m., August 12. All who knew Mr. Matthews, "Uncle Billy" as he was familiarly called, realize that a good man is gone.
