Dr. L.J.ROGERS Obituary, Salem, Henry County, Iowa from Salem newspaper 1888 Dr. L.J. ROGERS Two weeks ago we published a letter announcing the dying condition of Dr. L.J. Rogers. Until last Saturday we had received no further particulars of the ending of the life of this good man who was so well known and loved by our people. Before going to Nebraska, some two years ago, he had lived in Salem since territorial days. As doctor and preacher he had endeared himself to our people--he had shared their joys and their sorrows; he had been present at the birth of the child, the joyous marriage in vigorous youth, and alas, too often was called upon to administer God's consolation to mourning friends of the cold form after a few succeeding years. Now, in turn, the ministering hand lies listless in the grave. The following account of his death and burial is taken from the Hastings (Neb.) Gazette-Journal: The funeral services of the late Dr.L.J. Rogers took place from the Methodist church yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The house was crowded and some were unable to gain even standing room. The services were very beautiful and simple. The deceased was a member of the ministerial association and all the ministers of the city were present and participated in the ceremony. Dr. Britt made a short address, in which he spoke of the admirable christian character of the deceased and of his long connection with the church as a preacher and elder and of his success as a physician. He said that Dr. Rogers once told a young physician that his success, he believed, was mainly due to the fact that he used the very best remedies he knew of and then prayed God to bless the efforts he put fourth for his patient. A letter was read from Rev. W.R. Jones, who had known Dr. Rogers for some years, in which the earnest, honest, christian character of the deceased was strongly set fourth. If Dr. Rogers had lived a few months longer he and his wife would have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. He had passed his seventy-third year, but was still in good health up to within a little over a week before he died. He was conscious a few moments before he died and took every member of the family by the hand and, although unable to speak, in this silent way, with the light of God shining from his face he bid them all good bye. ====================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
