(1893) H. F. GILBERT, who resides on a farm of 160 acres in section 3, Maple township, Ida county, Iowa, has been identified with the agricultural interests of this place since 1888. Mr. Gilbert was born in Herkimer county, New York, September 26, 1856, son of S. L. and Eveline (Seaman) Gilbert, natives of New York. His grandfathers were Amos Gilbert and Jacob Seaman. S. L. Gilbert had two brothers in the late war, Fred and Amos. The former, now deceased, was wounded at Vicksburg, and the latter was a prisoner at Andersonville, and died. Mr. Gilbert came West to Jones county, Iowa, in 1857, where he improved a farm and operated a cheese factory. He is now engaged in the grain, cheese and creamery business at Onslow, that county. He is an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and in politics is a Republican. He and his wife have six children, namely: H. L., Ida L., Lester D., Addie, Lydia and Fred. The subject of our sketch received his education in Jones county and at Mount Vernon, Iowa. In 1888 he came to his present location and settled on the farm his father had purchased in 1883. This farm he has improved with good "buildings: a story and a half residence, 16x24 feet; a barn 16x32 feet, and a shed 20x 36 feet; and has planted a grove and orchard. He was married in Jones county, Iowa, January 1, 1881, to Miss Mary E. Doherty, a native of Springfield, Massachusetts, and a daughter of P. F. and Mary Doherty. Her mother is deceased. When she was six or seven years old Mrs. Gilbert came to Iowa, and in this State she was reared and educated. They have five children: Earl L., Elva M., Irma L., Willie H. and Clifford D. Mr. Gilbert is an enterprising and progressive young man and takes an active interest in promoting the general welfare of the community. He is a Republican and a member of I. O. O. F.
