John Schenk of Gordon’s Ferry was in the city Friday on business. He has been a resident of that place for about sixty years. Capt. Schenk has made a record in a way that would be considered hazardous. He has been the first man for at least fifty years to cross the ice after the freezing up of the river in the fall and the last to cross it in the spring. He has had many narrow escapes from a watery grave and on several occasions he broke in with his team, but always managed to get out all right. He does all his trading in Galena and takes a short cut in winter by crossing on the ice. County Auditor Weimer, who as a boy, knew the captain well, says he is a man of great nerve and that such a little thing as breaking through the ice, does not even jar him.
