He said he located in Iowa first in 1851, coming from his home in Pennsylvania to Bellevue entirely by river. The trip took about sixteen days and cost him sixteen dollars and he said that the board was excellent too. He located in Zwingle and from his home there saw the land all around him settled, towns spring up and civilization advance steadily westward until 1884 when he moved to Maquoketa, his present residence. A life long Republican, he cast his first vote for Gen. Winfield Scott in 1852 and his second for John C. Fremont.
