“Alabama Jim” Adds Another Year

James Sutton, better known as “Alabama Jim,” celebrated his ninety first
birthday, Wednesday, March 7 at the home of his son Glen Sutton in this city.

The following children were present for a family dinner, Mrs. Lillie Wilcox,
Hadden Sutton, Charles Sutton, Mrs. Alma Watters and Glen Sutton and their
families. One son, Wylie Sutton of Nebraska was unable to attend. Two large
birthday cakes were included in the dinner menu. Mr. Sutton received flowers
from the G. A. R. and W. R. C.

Mr. Sutton was born in Alabama in 1843 and enlisted in the Confederate army in
the Civil War and served 9 months under Stonewall Jackson. He later joined the
Federal army and was sent to Nashville, Tennessee, where he became a member of
Company E, Twelfth cavalry and served until the close of the war. He came to
Iowa in 1865 and located near Fulton, where he farmer for many years, later
moving to this city.
