Captain Johnson and Lieutenant Nietzel both did some exceptionally fine shooting. In the practice with the “Krag” the new gun, Capt. Johnson made ten straight bulls eyes out of ten shots at 200 yards, which was a unique record for the range. Lieut. Nietzel also made a straight record of bulls eyes at 100 yards at the disappearing target. In the final score the Captain ranked among the first fourteen, six of whom were from the 49th Regiment.
