Pvt. Daniel Moeller
Maquoketa Excelsior-Record, February 20, 1919

Letter to Amelia Moeller-

January 6, 1919

Dear Miss Moeller:
…The death of your brother, Private Daniel Moeller, occurred on the second day 
of the American drive in November, on one of the most famous fronts when we 
captured a little village. Our company had just entered the town, he and the 
rest of his platoon were put into a building. It was his turn to do guard, he 
was stationed inside the building looking out of a window, when an artillery 
shell hit through the window killing him outright.
As for himself personally, I will say that he was as level and obedient a 
soldier as ever fought under the Stars and Stripes. He has been with his 
organization ever since May and even while in training he was always glad to do 
his share, and sometimes more. He went through every battle his company was 
ever in, and had many friends in the company. His loss was mourned by every 
member and they all join me in extending to you and all his loved ones their 
deepest regrets and sympathy…
