Jackson Sentinel, June 18, 1920 

The funeral of John F. Gordon who died in France Sept. 30th, 1918, and whose 
remains arrived in this country a short time ago, was held from the Buchner 
chapel Tuesday afternoon and interment was made in Union cemetery will full 
military honors. John Francis Gordon was born in Cascade, Iowa, June 12, 1886. 
He grew to manhood and spent his life in that town up until the time of his 
enlistment in the Signal Corps. He was sent to Camp Alfred Vail, Little 
Silver, New Jersey, on May 20, 1918, where he was in training four months He 
sailed from Hoboken N. J., September 13, 1918 on the U. S. Transport St. 
Louis. He was taken ill on board ship and on his arrival in France he was 
removed to Base Hospital No. 33 at Brest where he only survived five days and 
on September 30, at 4:30 p.m. he passed away. After he sailed his parents 
never received any word from him, until November 18 they received word of his 
death. Great anxiety was felt by the family the week proceeding the message of 
death as John was always a faithful correspondent. He is survived by his 
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Almo Gordon, his sister, Miss Helen, and Mrs. Chas. 
Hamel, of Cascade, and Mrs. C. O. Campbell of Moline, Ill., and also many 
relatives of Maquoketa. He left his home in perfect health. He looked so young 
and brave. We never, thought how soon he would be laid in a soldier's grave.
