He left Maquoketa Sep. 21, 1917 with the first contingent of drafted men and sailed for France the last of April. He was a young man dearly beloved by all and his death offered as a sacrifice that the rest of us may live in freedom and peace, has cast a gloom of sadness over the entire community where he spent his life until called to the service of his country. He is survived by his parents, five brothers and four sisters.
