Local Marine Officer Dies on Saipan
Lt. Kenneth Smith Killed in Campaign Against Japanese

Lt. Kenneth Smith, 23-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Smith, of Maquoketa, 
has been killed in action, it was learned here this week. He is believed to 
have been in action at Saipan where more than 1400 Marines died in the first 
ten days of a 25-day campaign.

Lt. Smith entered service on Nov. 15, 1942, and reported at Quantico, Va., for 
officer training. Following completion of this training he was stationed at 
Camp Elliott, Calif., as an instructor and later served in the same capacity 
in New Zealand and New Caladonia.

He was a veteran of the Tarawa Campaign and had been sent to a Hawaiian Island 
rest camp before entering the recent Saipan campaign.

Born in Maquoketa January 8, 1921, Lt. Smith attended Maquoketa schools 
graduation in 1938.  He attended Maquoketa junior college for two years before 
entering the University of Iowa from which he graduated in 1942, receiving his 
B. A. degree.

He is survived by his parents and three brothers, John, Leo and Junior Smith, 
all at home, and a grandmother, Mrs. Anna Smith, of Maquoketa. A brother John, 
is awaiting call from the Army Air corps.

Memorial service will be held for Lt. Smith at Sacred Heart Catholic church on 
Monday, at 9:00 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Mullen in charge
