Jackson Sentinel, May 20, 1886 

Jackson Lodge No. 33, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, has purchaed and plans 
being prepared for a handsome structure. 

Maquoketa is to have a new Odd Fellows hall built this season. One of the 
oldest and strongest secret societies in our city is the Jackson Lodge No. 33, 
I. O. O. F., a lodge chartered and instituted away back in the early fifties. 
During all these years it has been steadily accumulating a surplus fund and 
increasing its membership without much show or ostentation until the time has 
come when their present lodge room in the Excelsior Block is too small for 
their accomodation and they are now obliged to make a change. Last Friday 
evening the trustees of the society were accordingly instructed to negotiate 
for the vacant lot on the east side of North Main Street from P. Mitchell for 
$1,500.00, including the half of the partition wall on the south side of the 
lot. The trustees so acted and now plans are being prepared for a new brick 
building to cover the space, 28' x 120'. The building is to be a first class 
structure, somewhat more ornamental in its front than the other buildings near 
it and the spacious store room and basement will be leased while the upper 
rooms are calculated for the exclusive use of the lodge. This will give our 
city a fine Odd Fellows Hall, whose ownership is vested in the society, the 
only secret society in our city, owning the building in which they meet, but 
this is nothing new for the Odd Fellows, as they have owned the third story in 
which they now meet, for some years.
