Davenport Gazette, Davenport, Iowa Territory, November 14, 1843.

INTERIOR NAVIGATION

On the 26th ult., a keel boat ascended the Maquoketa River to Doane’s Ferry, 
near the Forks and took in a cargo of about 500 bushels of wheat. It is 
supposed that by the removal of a few obstructions, that the stream will be 
navigable for the smaller class steamboats.
