Between the hours of eight and nine o’clock last Saturday evening, David Seeley of Maquoketa got into a quarrel with William Horan over a game of cards at Mrs. Besch’s saloon, and shot Horan dead. Seeley then walked hurriedly away from the scene and was lost sight of before the tardy officers thought of arresting him. Horan was a man aged about 46 years and was acting as hostler at Mrs. Besch’s boarding house and had not been a resident of Bellevue long. David Seeley is about 30 years of age, was born and brought up near Maquoketa and has been driving stage between Maquoketa and Bellevue for some days past. He has highly respected relatives living in our city, who feel deeply grieved and mortified over the bad conduct of the young man. Coroner D. N. Loose of this city was summoned to Bellevue on Sunday, and we herewith give the testimony obtained in the inquest held on Horan’s body and the verdict given by the coroner’s jury. Testimony of Fred Zenter: I was in the saloon of Mrs. Besch last night. William Horan and David Seeley were there playing cards. William Horan said to David Seeley that he must have counted too fast or else you are not out yet. Seeley said he counted right if he ever counted right in his life and anyone that said he couldn’t count right was a lying son-of-a-bitch. Horan got up and told Seeley to come outside and they would settle it. Horan stepped out the door. Seeley went out and in a few moments I heard the report of a revolver. I went outside and saw Horan sitting up against the side of the building. “The said jurors upon the oaths do say that the said William Horan came to his death at Bellevue, by a pistol ball fired by David Seeley with felonious intent.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ia/jackson/newspapers/murderat106nnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/iafiles/ File size: 2.7 Kb
