Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa, July 7, 1870

A terrible accident occurred in Tete des Morts township, Jackson county, a 
short time since, resulting in the death of two young men named Nicholas 
Garien and Nicholas Tyson. They were engaged in firing a cannon during a 
religious celebration, when fire from a cigar of one of the young men 
communicated to a paper containing several pounds of powder, blowing them both 
into the air, and mangling them terribly. Several others standing around were 
severely burned.
