For most adult Eastern Jackson County residents, the Sabula Gazette meant Wade Guenther and in post-World War Two period, Craig Shouse. The Sabula Gazette was founded in 1862 and had a succession of editors and publishers. Following founder R. B. Rice came J. B. Kulp, J. F. H. Sugg, Alex B. Fanning, Dr. J. F. Fairbank and Frank Hand. In 1880 Thomas Lambert and Alexander Gray bought the paper and upon the latter’s death a few months later, Lambert acquired complete ownership. However, he was so busy by 1902 with his duties in the State Legislature and as finance committeeman for the Iowa State Board of Education that he turned over the editorship and management to a young fellow named Wade Guenther. Wade had started out in the shop as a printer’s devil in 1897. The Sabula Gazette was a colorful, well-written, well printed paper and continued to prosper following World War Two when Craig Shouse managed the newspaper and related commercial printing business. Mr. Guenther completed 55 years in the business at the time of his sale of the paper to Robert Fulton of Clinton in 1952. During the last decade of his service he confined his activities to writing his popular “Column Left” column and a limited amount of news and advertising solicitation. Mr. Shouse joined the staff of Maquoketa Newspapers. Mr. Guenther completely retired with the sale of his paper. And in a very few years, the Sabula Gazette, which had formerly thrived on a mixture of Sabula, Clinton, Savanna and Miles advertising, went into an obvious terminal illness and died a natural death. More recently, Jim Peterson, a Sabula insurance man, has been publishing the Sabula “Post Gazette”. Weekly publications proved to be more ambitious than the advertising budget would bear, so it has become a monthly. Offset prepared copy is photographed and printed on the Maquoketa Newspapers Goss offset press. But the old Gazette building stands bare, with even a broken window or two. It’s a vivid reminder of a glorious chapter in Iowa and American history…the time of settling and building a nation…chronicled for Eastern Jackson County by the Sabula Gazette. -Bob Melvold File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ia/jackson/newspapers/thesabul109nnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/iafiles/ File size: 2.9 Kb
