February 3, 1920 Lyman Blair Buchner was born in Maquoketa, December 12, 1894. He died at Maquoketa January 30th, 1920, at 4 p. m., aged twenty-five years and eighteen days. Lyman graduated from the Maquoketa High School in 1913. At the time of his graduation he was president of his class and was an honored member of the Alumni Association. He was united in marriage June 1st, 1917, to Miss Eva Martin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Martin of Maquoketa. To this union one child was born. Dear little, Jimmie, just one year old at the time of his Father's death will never remember his Father nor know how much his Father loved him. Lyman was confirmed in the Episcopal church by Rev. Herbert C. Boissier, who also officiated at his marriage. The deceased was a member of the Order of Knights of Pythias of Maquoketa and Lyman never forgot its teachings that they can best serve the order by the cure of those who have home ties upon them. Lyman was a manly young man, held in high esteem by all who knew him. He was kind, sympathetic and interested in the welfare of his friends and those about him. He had a host of friends in Maquoketa and in the country for miles around. Last Friday afternoon when the word passed from lip to lip that Lyman had left us all were startled and astonished and could hardly believe that it was true. A weight of sorrow rested on many a heart and they all felt they had lost a true friend. A week ago Friday Lyman drove the hearse for the Mrs. Weldy funeral. He with his brother shoveled snow at the cemetery that the roads might be passable for the funeral procession. He complained that afternoon to his Mother that his chest pained him. He went home and to bed and just one week from that day he bid his loved ones good bye. During this brief illness of one week, everthing was done for him that was possible in the way of medical attendance and kind nursing but of no avail. He passed to his reward at 4 p. m. Friday, January 30. He leaves to mourn his untimely death, his wife, his son Jimmie, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Buchner and one sister. Mrs. Lloyd Montross of Sloan, Iowa, one brother, H. Gale, who was associated with him in business, many warm friends who will miss him. Short services were held from the late residence on East Pleasant street conducted by Lyman's former pastor, Rev. H. C. Boissier, thence to the Methodist church where services were conducted by the Revs. J. J. Kidder, D. F. Boomershine, John Watterson and S. A. Smith paid beautiful tribute to the deceased. Peerless Lodge No. 60, of which Lyman was a loyal member, attended in a body and conducted the services at Mt. Hope Cemetery. The Knights of Pythias male chorus provided the music.
