Cannell At five minutes before 12 o'clock last Saturday the 16th, Hon. Thos. E. Cannell passed quietly over the dark river of death. His demise was not unexpected although his sickness was not of long duration, but several days previous to his last his friends had lost hope and the best medical skill could give but little encouragement. He was born in Kirk Baddan, Isle of Man in 1827 and came to America in boyhood. He was for many years engaged in the boot and shoe business in this city until a few years ago and accumulated a considerable competence. Retiring from that business he was elected president of the First National Bank of this city, which position he held at the time of his death. He has served as Mayor of Maquoketa several terms with credit and honor and filled other important positions. His death cast a sad gloom over the entire community. He leaves a devoted wife and an adopted daughter to mourn his great loss. The funeral occurred from the Congregational church Tuesday afternoon and was attended in a body by Knights Templar and Blue Lodge Masons, of which he was an honored, high degree member. There were also present a large concourse of friends and acquaintances. Rev. Pratt, Universalist minister of Cedar Rapids conducted the services assisted by Chaplin Quadams of Helion Lodge A. F. & A. M. and pronounced the last sad rites at the grave, declaring that the deceased was a believer in the Universalist church involving the mortality of the soul. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the entire community in the loss of one who bore the respect and esteem of a very large circle of friends and acquaintances.
