In the following year with his brother John, George came to Iowa, settling near Charlotte in Clinton county, where they engaged in milling business. In 1860 the parents followed the sons to Iowa and purchased a farm in Clinton county. George went to the parental home to assist in the conduct of the newly purchased home. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Cooper answered the call to the colors and on September 25, 1861, enlisted as a member of Company A, 15th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, with which organization he served his country with honor until November 16, 1864, when he was mustered out of service, having participated in some of the most important and most bitterly fought battles of the war, including Shiloh, Corinth and Vicksburg. After receiving his discharge Mr. Cooper returned to Clinton county and on August 30, 1868, was united in marriage to Miss Rebbeca J. Hayes of Farmers Creek township, Jackson county. On the following year Mr. Cooper sold his Clinton county farm and purchased a tract of land in Farmers Creek township near Fulton, where he engaged extensively in cattle raising, becoming known as one of the most successful stockmen in this section. In 1881 Mr. and Mrs. Cooper and family moved to Maquoketa, but Mr. Cooper continued in the livestock business for several years when he retired. At the organization of the American Savings Bank in 1895, Mr. Cooper became a heavy stockholder and was named vice-president and one of the directors of the institution, which offices he continued to hold until his death. Mr. Cooper was an honored member of Helion Lodge No. 36, A. F. & A. M. and A. W. Drips Post No. 74, G. A. R. of which he twice served as commander. For fourteen years he served as a member of the board of supervisors. Since the death of his devoted wife in 1925 Mr. Cooper had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. George Brown of North Eliza Street of this city. At 12:55 o'clock Thursday afternoon fell asleep to awaken in a better world. Funeral services were held from the Congregational church Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. A. W. Sinden officiating. The committal services were conducted by the Masonic order. Interment was at Mt. Hope cemetery. To Mr. and Mrs. Cooper were born eight children, two of which passed away in infancy, George Jr. of this city, Mrs. Blanche King of Chicago, Fred, who passed away in 1911, Frank of San Jose, Calif., Mrs. Gertrude Myatt, who passed away in 1903, and Mrs. Grace Brown of this city. There also survive twenty grandchildren, and nine greatgrandchildren, three brothers, John of Boone, Charles of Ames and Forbes of Welton, and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Jordan of Wichita, Kan., and Mrs. Anna Rea of Boone.
