Samuel Ely was born in Washington County, New York, February 27, 1829 and removed to Wayne County with his parents at 10 years of age. Here he attained to manhood and was married to Miss Catharine Taylor, August 27, 1845, who remained his life companion, and now survives him. They came to Iowa in 1852 and located in Clinton County, near Welton. After a residence of some years in Missouri, they returned to Maquoketa in 1875. The fruits of their marriage were seven children, four of whom are living, and with the exception of Miss Pollard of Missouri, who is ill, all were present at the funeral. Mr. Ely had been suffering with bronchial trouble for a year, and in the fall of 1893, went east to see his aged mother, hoping that a change might benefit him. It did not and he returned in December and was forced to his bed shortly after, and the best of medical aid and nursing has steadily failed until death called him away. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon and was largely attended. Rev. G. A. Whitney, who officiated, stated in his sermon that Samuel gave his soul to God and entered earnestly into prayer long before his death. The remains were laid to rest in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
